B is for BBQ

Pure protein week – Day 2:

I love Chinese food, but takeouts are usually far from healthy. Luckily, I found an awesome Chinese supermarket where I live recently, and I’ve been buying delicious Chinese food from there to satisfy my cravings for takeout.

Healthier alternative #1:

Order BBQ pork instead of General Tso’s chicken. BBQ pork (or Char Siu pork) is roasted in the oven, while General Tso’s chicken is fried. According to Wikipedia, a typical restaurant serving of General Tso’s chicken contains 11 g of saturated fat, 3200 mg of sodium, over 300 mg of cholesterol, and clocks in around 1300 calories! BBQ pork contains considerably less fat and calories and is equally delicious. BBQ pork is the way to go!

Healthier alternative #2:

Choose bean curd instead of deep-fried tofu. This is pretty self-explanatory; deep-fried tofu is deep fried, which equals extra fat and calories. Bean curd, on the other hand, is packed with protein, low in fat and calories, and is a good source of iron and calcium. Bean curd for the win!

It is totally possible to eat Chinese food without hurting your waistline as long as you make healthy choices!
